By JERRY SCHAEFFER Correspondent ORMOND BEACH -- It is still a few weeks until Christmas, but Father Lopez felt charitable Friday night at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. The Green Wave handed cross-town rival Calvary Christian a couple of gift touchdowns, propelling the Lions toward a 26-10 triumph in the regular-season finale for both teams. Two fumbles by Lopez (1-9) led to 14 of Calvary's points. The first occurred in the first quarter with the score tied at 7 after both teams had scored on their opening possessions. Pedro Del Valle's recovery of Mitch Lane's bobble set up the Lions (7-3) on the Lopez 20-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Cameron Hadley hit Feizan Sollowen with an 18-yard pass for a touchdown. In the second quarter, David Jones jarred the ball from Lane, then scooped it up and ran 41 yards for the the score. "We made it easy for (the Lions)," Green Wave coach Jim Bernhardt said. "They still had to execute to take advantage, but they have great athletes and did just that." Jermaine Briggs scored the other two TDs for the Lions, barreling in from the 4 in the first quarter and crossing from the 2 in the third period. "We really underestimated Father Lopez," Calvary coach Billy Glenn said. "They fought well. Our defense forced some big turnovers that we were able to do something with, or this game could have been really tight." Along with forcing the three turnovers, the Lions defense limited the Green Wave to only 18 yards rushing, as 14 of Lopez' 31 rushing plays going for lost yardage. "Our defensive line stayed in the backfield and really set this win up for us," Glenn said. Lopez, which led early after Lane's 4-yard touchdown run on the game's opening drive, managed just three other points on a 28-yard field goal by Dustin Venneman on the final play of the first quarter, slicing the Calvary margin to 13-10. "I felt we play tougher (Friday)," Bernhardt said. "We showed some resilence we had not shown before, and I saw some things that give me good hope for the future." Calvary, a third-year program, will play a post-season game on Thursday night, athletic director Jack Clark said. It will be against St. Augustine St. Joseph at 7 p.m. at the Ormond Complex.
