Creek shutout by Miramar in jamboree game

If there was any doubt whether or not Miramar quarterback Eugene Smith would be ready to play with a sore shoulder, the proof was right there on the field as Smith threw for 185 yards on 14 for 26 passing in just three quarters leading the host Patriots to a 19-0 preseason victory over Coconut Creek Friday night.

One of the top quarterback prospects in the nation, Smith has been hampered by a lingering sore shoulder since playing in 7-on-7s and various camps over the summer.

Smith seemed to fire on all cylinders, launching balls deep down field, as well as throwing perfect strikes to his receivers.

Miramar coach Damon Cogdell did not think Smith was going to play, but also did not rule it out.  "It\'s doubtful that he\'ll play tonight, but we will see how he feels during warm-ups," Smith said.  "[Eugene] has looked good in practice, despite the aching shoulder."

The Miramar defense also had something to prove.  It held the Cougars to 41 total yards and 4 first downs.

Wide receiver Ivan McCartney had two touchdowns catches.  The first score was on a

14-yard pass which gave the Patriots a 7-0 lead near the end of the first quarter.  The lead was extended to 14-0 when McCartney grabbed his second touchdown catch from Smith midway through the second quarter.

Coconut Creek could not generate much offense.  It only was able to reach the Miramar red zone once, which resulted in a missed field goal after a 71-yard drive.

Coconut Creek will open its regular season next Friday at Coral Springs, while Miramar will host Monsignor Pace on September 12th.
